Introduced in Windows 7, the WordPad ribbon gives people the ability to edit documents in a user interface that resembles one in Microsoft Word. While Word and WordPad are compatible in several ways, WordPad cannot perform some tasks that Word handles easily. You’ll need to evaluate your business needs when deciding which program to use.
Common Features
Word and WordPad share two important features: they both allow you to embed objects and format text. RTF stands for Rich Text Format and makes it possible for RTF editors to display different fonts, colors and styles. Since Notepad doesn't support RTF, you'll need to use Word, WordPad or an RTF editor that can if you need to create formatted text or view an RTF document someone else created. You'll also find Word and WordPad handy when you need to create a document that contains graphics.
Copy and Paste Functionality
Basic text editors are fine for displaying information, but adding color, formatting and style to documents can make them look more professional. WordPad has the ability to copy formatted text and graphics from another application, such as a Web browser, and paste it into a document. If you paste an image into the document, you can resize that image by dragging one of its handles. Microsoft Word is compatible with WordPad because you can copy and paste rich text between those two applications.
File Type Compatibility
In 2007, Microsoft introduced the Open XML Format that newer versions of Word use. When you see the letter 'x' next to the word 'doc,' you are viewing a file extension that describes a DOCX file. Many people who use Word save their documents in this format. WordPad also has the ability to create and save DOCX files. However, if you open a DOCX document that you created using Word, you may not be able to see all the document's original content. That's because Word can create tables, WordArt, forms and other objects that WordPad cannot.
Tips
If you simply need to jot down a note or view a document that contains only text, you might want to do that using a lighter weight editor such as Notepad. If you’d like the ability to make a document that contains images, you don't need to purchase Word when WordPad can handle that task. If you don’t have Word, you can also use WordPad’s “Insert Object” button and select “PowerPoint Presentation Slide” or another external object to add it to your document.

MicrosoftWordPad is a free rich texteditor first included with Microsoft Windows 95 and all versions since. Although capable of doing more than Notepad, WordPad is not as advanced as Microsoft Word. However, it does give you additional features, such as the capability of inserting pictures and text formatting. The picture below shows an example of Microsoft WordPad.
Microsoft WordPad is capable of editing and saving plain-text file (.txt), rich text format (.rtf), Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx), and OpenDocument text (.odt) format files.
NoteNot all versions of WordPad support all above formats. Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, and Windows XP does not support the .docx format. Windows 7 introduced the support of .odt files, so early versions of Windows do not support this format as well.

Why use Word instead of a WordPad?
A rich-text editor like WordPad offers many of the same basic features as Microsoft Word. Where Microsoft Word differs is the ability to do more advanced features. Some of the advanced features include mail merges, spellchecker, styles, tables, headers & footers, WordArt, columns, margins, and more.
